Membership software is often built with associations in mind. Chambers get sold the same product with the labels changed. Four gaps show up quickly.
Tiered investor levels with bundled benefits. Association dues are frequently one number. Chamber dues rarely are. You have tiers by employee count or revenue, and each tier bundles benefits. Directory placement, event tickets, sponsorship rights, referral priority.
Generic software handles the price difference fine. It struggles with benefit fulfillment. Which tier gets how many event tickets, and has this member used theirs? That question should not require a spreadsheet.
Sponsorship inventory. Chambers sell sponsorships continuously. Annual packages, event-specific slots, newsletter placements, directory categories.
That is inventory management, and most membership systems have no concept of it. Ask a vendor how they track what has been sold, what remains, and whether benefits were delivered.
A public directory that works as a marketing asset. Association directories are usually private, for members only. Chamber directories are public, and they are a primary member benefit.
That changes the requirements. Listings need to be findable by search engines. Categories need to make sense to residents, not just to staff. Members need to update their own listings.
A directory buried behind a login delivers a fraction of the value members expect.
Referral and lead tracking. When a chamber connects a resident to a member business, that is the value proposition made visible. Being able to tell a member how many referrals they received is powerful at renewal time.
Most generic systems have no place to record this at all.
What to ask. Bring your actual investor tier sheet to a demo. Ask the vendor to configure it in front of you. Then ask how a member sees the benefits they have used.
If that takes exports and manual tracking, the software was not built for how you work.
At GrowthZone, we build for chambers specifically, not for associations with chamber labels applied.
