Discover how the American College of Medical Toxicology found a better structural fit with GrowthZone AMS, consolidating email, forms, and integrations into a single system built for its size.
When Rebecca Weinstein joined the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT), she inherited a platform that didn't quite match how the association actually operates. ACMT's membership structure, built around individual physicians rather than complex multi-tiered organizations, needed something simpler and more consolidated. After a thorough search across 14 platforms, Rebecca found that fit with GrowthZone AMS.
Where the previous system required up to five separate records per hospital to track different program types, GrowthZone AMS lets Rebecca maintain one record per hospital with custom fields for each detail.
Built-in email, forms, surveys, and marketing automation replaced a separate email platform and survey tool entirely, consolidating ACMT's day-to-day operations into one place.
A technically demanding integration between GrowthZone AMS, ACMT's learning management system, and its affiliated medical journal replaced a clunky multi-step login with two clicks.
Committees, award histories, event registration, and email performance tracking all now live in one system, rather than scattered across disconnected tools.
Rebecca Weinstein, Director of Membership and Communications at the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT), joined the organization two years ago, bringing AMS experience from a previous role where she'd run a full evaluation and chosen GrowthZone. ACMT represents emergency room physicians who specialize in poison and toxicology, a little over 1,000 members across the United States and internationally. At ACMT, Rebecca inherited a different setup: the organization had been on MemberSuite for about five years, a decision made before she arrived.
Rebecca noticed fairly quickly that MemberSuite wasn't matching how ACMT actually operates. ACMT's membership is built almost entirely around individual doctors, many of whom happen to work at the same hospitals, a structure simpler than the multi-tiered organizational memberships MemberSuite is built to handle at scale.
"I think Member Suite is for a much larger association. I think there are things that it does that just didn't apply to our structure."
That mismatch showed concretely how ACMT's data was organized. The association maintains detailed public directories tracking which hospitals offer medical fellowships versus clerkships, two distinct training program types. In MemberSuite, that structure required creating separate records for the same hospital depending on which program or role was being tracked, sometimes five different records for a single institution, one for the clerkship, one for the fellowship, one just to show where people worked. In GrowthZone, Rebecca now maintains one record per hospital, with custom fields surfacing the clerkship- and fellowship-specific details on that same record instead of splitting them apart.
The initial implementation hadn't gone as smoothly as it should have either, and by the time Rebecca dug in, the setup had some real gaps: incomplete profile fields, reports that had never been built, and single sign-on connections that were never fully finished. Untangling that took real effort on both sides.
Rather than write off GrowthZone AMS products entirely, Rebecca leaned on her prior experience with standard GrowthZone AMS and brought her concerns directly to GrowthZone leadership. The response was a genuine commitment to make it right, a dedicated push to migrate her to the platform that fit ACMT's structure, and she came away feeling genuinely listened to rather than managed.
To be thorough, Rebecca still ran a fresh AMS search from scratch, ultimately demoing 14 different platforms, from large, heavily customized systems like Fontiva down to lightweight tools like Wild Apricot, before landing back on GrowthZone AMS. She describes the process as playing “a little bit of Goldilocks,” some platforms felt too big for ACMT's needs, others too small, before GrowthZone AMS turned out to be the right size.
For Rebecca, the deciding factor wasn't just familiarity; it was how many separate tools GrowthZone AMS's built-in features let her retire. The built-in email module replaced MailChimp. Native forms and surveys replaced SurveyMonkey. Marketing automation workflows let her run curated outreach to different member segments, physicians, nurses, EMTs, poison center specialists, automatically excluding anyone who'd already registered for a given course.
One of the more technically demanding pieces was single sign-on between GrowthZone AMS and ACMT's learning management system and its affiliated medical journal, the latter run by a Germany-based provider. It took real coordination to get right, but the result replaced a clunky multi-step login process with two clicks, something Rebecca describes as having gone from a genuinely difficult technical hurdle to running very smoothly today.
Given the data quality issues left behind, Rebecca and her team approached the move less like a transfer and more like starting fresh: reviewing every field, deciding what historical data actually mattered, and rebuilding clean records rather than carrying old problems forward. Her onboarding coach, Dan Rekstad, was a consistent resource throughout, someone she could bring questions and half-formed ideas to and reliably leave with a workable solution.
Core functionality was live within about two months, in time for that year's membership renewal cycle. The more specialized, nuanced pieces, the deeper integrations especially, took roughly three additional months to fully settle.
A year in, Rebecca describes the shift in stark terms.
"It's made my job 1,000 times easier because now we have a single source of truth for everything."
Committees, award-winner histories, event registration, email performance tracking, it all lives in one system now, with Rebecca and her team using nearly the full range of GrowthZone AMS's features.
Because MemberSuite carries a higher price point and a reputation as the more feature-heavy platform, some colleagues assumed Rebecca's move was a step down. She pushes back on that framing directly.
"Member Suite was infinitely more expensive and quote-unquote larger and more capable... I felt the exact opposite, though, because there's so many more features with GrowthZone. MemberSuite didn't have an email module; MemberSuite didn't have forms and survey functionality."
The distinction, as Rebecca sees it, isn't better versus worse, it's a difference in what each product is actually built to be: MemberSuite as a deeper CRM with strong financial tooling for larger, more complex organizations, versus GrowthZone AMS as a more complete day-to-day operating system for an association ACMT's size.
