Why Most Members Don’t Know What You Offer

Short answer: Most members don’t know the benefits their association offers even exist. It’s a cognitive trap called the curse of knowledge. You live inside your organization every day. So you assume members know what you know. They don’t. The fix is to tell them again. More often. In the places they actually look.

The gap that quietly costs you members

Here’s a scene every leader has lived. A member calls, frustrated, looking for something. A template. A discount. A directory. A certification. You realize you’ve offered it for years. They just never knew. Multiply that by your whole membership. You get one of the biggest hidden drivers of churn. Members don’t renew value they never knew they had.

Why smart teams fall into it

The curse of knowledge is simple. Once you know something deeply, you forget what not knowing feels like. You’ve announced that benefit a hundred times. You’re sick of saying it. Surely everyone’s heard by now. They haven’t. You live in your organization all day. Members visit occasionally, between running their own lives. Here’s the rule of thumb. When you’re tired of saying something, members are just starting to hear it.

How to close the gap

  • Say it again, on purpose. Resurface existing benefits, not just new ones. A recurring “did you know?” slot earns its place.
  • Meet members where they look. Use the portal, the renewal flow, onboarding, and event follow-ups. Not one buried page.
  • Lead with the member’s problem. Frame each benefit around the pain it solves.
  • Tell member stories. One member using a benefit well is your best ad.
  • Onboard like it matters. A member who finds three benefits early renews differently.

The mindset shift

Stop assuming. Start repeating. The best teams at engagement don’t have the most benefits. Their members can actually name what they get. Your members already look for things you have. Your job is to help them find them.

At GrowthZone, we help you turn “we offer that” into “our members know we offer that.”
